For the fan who has everything

And finally for today, if it’s always been your dream to send a 40-year-old stadium that’s been host to five World Series crashing down into a heap of rubble, you need wait no longer! The St. Louis Cardinals are holding a charity raffle to be the person who pushes the button to blow up Busch Stadium once the 2005 season is concluded: Tickets are $10, with the winner getting to trigger “the 2,000 pieces of explosives and hundreds of blasting caps that will collapse the venerable ballpark.” You must be 18 years or older and a resident of Illinois or Missouri to be eligible, which presumably rules out Bud Selig.

  1. Hasn’t there been six World Series at Bush Stadium II, not five? The years should be 1967, 1968, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 2004?

  2. Good catch – I think I blocked out 1985 for some reason. The notion of the Kansas City Royals being World Champions must seem too implausable to be real these days…

  3. So implausible you had to say it twice? Lay off the minor-league jokes, we won two in a row just recently. Frankly, what’s minor-league about the Royals is the front office. I think Mr. Glass is keeping Baird there on purpose. We’re going for two No. 1 draft picks in a row.

  4. Sorry, something freaky is going on with this item where it keeps insisting on repeating posts. But hey, maybe if you’re lucky this will mean *four* No. 1 draft picks in a row…

  5. I am disheartend to learn that this contest is limited to residents of MO and IL. As a Mets fan living in NY, I was hoping to be the one to push the plunger and level Busch…with the ’85 Cardinals inside it.
