Braves VP says team “ahead of schedule” on completely unfinalized stadium deal

There’s a long piece in the Atlanta Business Journal by Maria Saporta (reprinted on Saporta’s own blog) on progress on the Braves‘ new stadium in Cobb County, and team officials are, predictably, all optimism. “A hundred percent of our focus is building that stadium and playing there in April 2017,” says Braves VP Mike Plant. “We are ahead of schedule.”

That must be a pretty lenient schedule given the insanely long list of things that the Braves and Cobb haven’t yet negotiated. Plant did say that the “first draft” of an actual stadium operating agreement is “very close to being finished,” but that’s still only one of several agreements that need to be completed, and a bond expert has already said it would take a “herculean effort” to get everything done on time. That’s not to say that the Cobb stadium won’t happen — deadlines have a funny way of kicking negotiations into high gear — but as for things going well, I’ll believe it when I see it.
