No TRO for L.A.A. of A.
Strike one for the city of Anaheim: A California judge has
denied the city's request for a temporary restraining order against the Angels renaming themselves the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. (En Espanol, that's "Los Angeles de Los Angeles del Anaheim.") A hearing on a preliminary injunction is scheduled for January 21.
A Dodger fan called me yesterday just to rub it in. Luckilly though he is a Sooner fan too so I was able to shut him up easily. So it seems the city will lose this battle simply because they did not anticipate an owner buying the team that would go against all tradition and standard practice in major American sports. Now maybe this will work and he will make more money, and it has worked for a minor league team, the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino. Of course their team was not drawing any fans and they are minor league so no one really cares, but where do we draw the line? They have comedy routines in between innings and dollar beer nights, can we get that too then Arte?
To be fair, the Rams were called "L.A." when they played in Anaheim, too. Doesn't make it any less stupid, but it does undercut the "standard practice" argument somewhat.
At least the Metrostars dropped the NY/NJ moniker in 1997.
