Democracy Now tomorrow with Kucinich
Just got word that myself, Bettina Damiani of Good Jobs New York, and U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich will be on the TV/radio show Democracy Now tomorrow morning at 8 am Eastern time, to discuss the latest New York Yankees stadium shenanigans. Given that co-host Juan Gonzalez has written extensively on the topic as well, it should be an informative half-hour or so. Check the station map for when it will air in your area, or just visit the show archives starting later in the day tomorrow.
UPDATE: The video and audio streams of the show are now online here. And yes, they picked a nice show title.
Compelling discussion that was riveting and nauseating at the same time. A private box at the new Yankee Stadium for NYC officials...the "landlord box"? Are they insane? Daily, we hear reports of the collapse of the economy, with nothing but bad news far into the future, yet somehow, the team owners and state and city officials have managed to swindle NYC taxpayers out of between one and two billion dollars...
I have been so naive, thinking that it was just war and the criminal organization masquerading as a political administration that was draining the lifeblood of the glorious surplus we had in 2000 and turning it into massive deficit.
This discussion proves that our own local elected officials either don't understand how they were duped into giving enormous public subsidies for private profit, or they DID know and chose to participate, hoping to regularly enjoy the comforts of the luxury boxes set aside for them. It is a travesty!
I have been fighting against the absurdly out-of-scale Atlantic Yards debacle since it was announced. The back room deals, manipulation of information and insane unfairness has mobilized the communities around the mega development to fight back. There was too much to pay attention to locally, so I guess I was not paying enough attention to what was happening in the Bronx.
If our taxes get raised or if jobs get cut or if services are diminished, and these huge projects to enrich private owners go forward, then there is no justice.
If we don't trace who approved the projects and excise them from our government and force restructuring the deals to make them fair, then we are lost.
