Selig: An All-Star Game in every pot!

With a referendum on $425 million in public stadium renovation funds just two weeks away, Kansas City Royals owner David Glass today announced that MLB commissioner Bud Selig had promised to award an All-Star Game to Kansas City if the vote is successful. (Which All-Star Game? One “between 2010 and 2015,” said Glass: “We’re not going to specify a date as yet because we want to see how the schedule unfolds for the renovations.”) This will come as news to anyone who missed Selig’s pronouncement two years ago that he would henceforth use All-Star Games as a reward for cities that build new stadiums.

  1. I seem to remember a while ago, we were being told in St. Louis that we’d get an All Star Game in return for a new stadium. For a while the 2006 or 2007 ASG was being touted as the carrot they were dangling in front of our face to get us to all unite behind the Cardinals’ new stadium plans. But once construction began on Busch Stadium III (actually, for a while before that, once construction of the stadium became inevitable) it seems that we stopped hearing that, and I see no evidence that St. Louis is getting the ASG anytime soon.

    My advice to the folks in KC: get it in writing!

  2. Len, I’ll bet that the fact that the Cardinals are kicking in a higher percentage of total cost than Selig wants is why you haven’t heard about it.

    Just ask Peter McGowan why PacBell/SBC/AT&T/YourNameHere Park hasn’t gotten an ASG yet!

  4. ’07 – San Francisco and Pac Bell Park…d’oh, SBC Park…no, wait…AT&T Park

    ’08 – 2:1 Anaheim, 2500:1 Tampa Bay, but since Pittsburgh picked up a second All-Star Game in 12 years, Selig may award TB the ASG to spur season ticket sales and as a “thanks” for the new ownership group

    ’09 – 1:100 St. Louis (almost a guarantee)

    ’10 – New Yankee Stadium, New Twins’ ballpark or loser of Anaheim-Tampa Bay battle

    ’11 – New Mets ballpark, Arizona, Philadelphia

    ’12 – Yankees-Twins-Anaheim-Tampa Bay-Kansas City

    ’13 – DC-Mets-Arizona-Philadelphia

    ’14 – You get the point….
