CNBC’s Contessa Brewer reported yesterday that according to “several sources” at a sports betting conference in New Jersey that the site Oakland A’s management is looking to buy in Las Vegas “is likely Bally’s Tropicana,” a location that’s been rumored for a possible stadium for months now. Brewer also said (not citing any sources at all) that “they would have to figure out what that public-private financing plan would look like, that’s a very important piece for MLB.”
So, let’s read the available tea leaves! A’s president Dave Kaval doesn’t appear to be attending the New Jersey conference (or at least if he is, he’s somehow managed not to tweet from there, which would be unlike him), so the most likely sources are either someone with Bally’s or someone with Las Vegas tourism. So this could be an inside scoop, or it could be someone trying to promote their site as good to buy for baseball. Or it could be Kaval genuinely expressing an interest in buying the site, or pretending to want to buy the site so he can put pressure on Oakland to cough up a billion dollars. So many options!
I could say more, but I’m tired and really this has all been speculated about over and over, and there’s no new info here except a fresh rumor of where the rumored land purchase might be rumored to happen, so it’s not worth commenting on until there’s something more solid. I wouldn’t have even bothered to write this up except a bunch of scoop-hungry news sites are already repeating this report, so it’s well on its way to taking on a life of its own, to where I fully expect to get a call from a journalist (or at least a querulous tweet) asking what I think of the news that the A’s are totally definitely moving to Las Vegas for a deal similar to what the Raiders got. So, so very tired…
Since there’s no way you’d want that prime property sitting dark 250 nights a year, I’m now contemplating the mechanics of a duel use domed baseball stadium/casino. Could you roll up the turf, and roll in the carpet, cocktails and craps? I see a bunch of restless slot players standing outside the stadium complaining when a game goes extra innings.
Dave Kaval and the A’s are using clickbait to extract concessions from Oakland. Neil do I have to research Dave Kaval’s email account so I can demand he send you a Chick-Fil-A gift card for Christmas for doing his job.
I should demand one too for stating this scheme won’t work until you announce your intention to move to Vegas and you’ve check all boxes needed to be credible. My gift card better cover an 8 count and a shake
One of the big problems with fact-checking fake news is that you often only end up amplifying the original bogus claims. The Streisand Effect cuts both ways.

Hyping Elon Musk’s Las Vegas Convention Center underground Tesla Taxi stand as a “trill ride.” Big pass.
“You might think, okay, it’s like a subway. But this is more like a HIGHWAY UNDERGROUND.”
So, a tunnel?
A sewer tunnel.
