New renderings show Titans’ $2.1B football stadium looks like … a football stadium. With a roof!

It’s been a while since we’ve had any awesome vaportecture renderings drop, but the Tennessee Titans have got! us! covered!

Okay, that’s somewhere south of “awesome,” unless you’re a serious cafe table umbrella fetishist. What else?

Yeah, see, that’s just the same rendering, but from a different angle and at night. (Not sure why so many fans are still entering the stadium — or standing around on lawns talking on their phones — when the Titans QB is in the middle of handing off the ball, but there’s no accounting for sports fans.) Can we have something that, just maybe, shows a sporting event in progress, and people watching it?

Okay, that’s a little better, anyway. I’m slightly concerned why all the on-field photographers are identically dressed in white long-sleeved shirts and black slacks, not to mention why the video board appears to be showing footage of a player that is long over … or maybe won’t be happening until the future? Also those upper-deck seats look absolutely horrible, a mile from the field both horizontally and vertically, but the current stadium is if anything worse, so I guess it’s a solid B-minus graded on a 21st-century curve. (Though the new stadium would seat 60,000 fans, about 9,000 less than the current one, so really the proposed upper deck needs to be compared to the front of the old upper deck — fans currently seated in the back of the upper deck will have much worse sightlines, since they’ll be sitting on their sofas.)

The Titans owners said they commissioned the renderings to “inform site planning and cost estimates,” whatever that means; it’s hard to see how bean counters are helped by seeing lots of tiny clip-art entourage, so more likely the actual goal is to justify site planning and cost estimates through the utter coolness of, you know, a regular football stadium, but with a roof.

The only thing really missing to provide necessary shock-and-awe is a video — oh hey wait there’s a video:

Sure, most of it is either stock Titans football footage, a black screen, or lens flare. But it gets you excited for what could be, doesn’t it? Speaking of which, isn’t it time some developer asks for a bunch of public money to build Stark Tower? Between the economic impact and the fan service, it’d be a guaranteed gold mine!

  1. I wish the renderings included the 10,000 temporary seats they will need to host a Super Bowl. (or a Kenny Chesney concert)

  2. I would think that that cafe umbrella saturated pavillion is more awesome if I was the one who was going to be able to collect rent from commercial partners on it despite not having spent a dime to build it (and being effectively exempt from property taxes on it too).

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or franchise holder, in this case.
